
🔑 Officers with the Athens High School Key Club, a student service organization, spoke to members of the Kiwanis Club this week about their work in the community. Key Club members this school year collected 139 pounds of dog food for the Athens Animal Rescue Shelter, helped Keep Athens Beautiful decorate the courthouse square, helped with the Halloween "Trunk or Treat" event at Central Athens Elementary, and served food for Oktoberfest with St. John Lutheran Church. They have also committed to assisting at the Athens Soup Kitchen for the remainder of the school year. 🏅🏅 We are SO EXCITED to have two cross country regional qualifiers! Freshman Donna Carpenter and senior Jose Vazquez will be competing in their respective UIL Region II 4A cross country meets on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in Grand Prairie. The events will be held at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake. The girls' race starts at 11am and boys at 11:30am. We are incredibly proud of you both! #HornetNation


🏈🎟️ The Hornets travel to Kilgore this Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30. Tickets may be purchased at the Hornet field house through 4pm Thursday for $5 (adults) or $3 (students). They may also be purchased online through the Kilgore ticket link below. After Friday at 3:30pm, those online tickets will be $8. No tickets will be sold at the gate.

The class is part of Athens High School's Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. CTE combines traditional academic courses with more career-focused courses to prepare students for life after high school.


🎉 Amazing news! Athens High School seniors Antonio Castillo and Addison Maytubby earned academic honors from the prestigious College Board National Recognition Programs. Antonio received the National Hispanic Recognition Award and the National Rural and Small Town Award. Addison received the National Indigenous Award and the National Rural and Small Town Award. These awards recognize high-performing students and help them stand out to colleges. “Being recognized by the College Board is an enormous achievement that requires nothing short of academic excellence,” said AHS Principal Jason Iglehart. “We’re very proud of Addison and Antonio.” #HornetNation


🍴👨🍳 Our culinary students are awesome! Members of Athens Masonic Lodge #165 were recently treated to a meal prepared and served by Athens High School culinary students. Roughly 30 Masons enjoyed meatloaf, mashed potato casserole, mac-and-cheese casserole, and Oreo-and-chocolate-chip pound cake. Pictured serving is Dustin Matlock, who is also the pit master for one of AHS's competition barbecue teams, under the direction of culinary teacher Lisa Ramsey.

Athens Kiwanis member John Edgington speaks to members of an Athens High School government class Thursday about the history and importance of the U.S. Constitution. He, his wife, Margaret, and local Kiwanis President Monty Ingram gave out copies of the document to the students. Sunday, Sept. 17, is Constitution Day.


🐮🏅 Athens FFA show team members had an excellent weekend in Texarkana, Arkansas, showing heifers at the Four States Fair Livestock Show. In the junior heifer show, AMS eighth-grader Wyatt Tappan took fourth-place Brahman; Central Athens fourth-grader Reese Tappan took third-place Red Brahman, and AHS junior SkyeLann White took third place Chianina. In the open show, Wyatt took second and fourth-place Brahman; Reese took second-place Red Brahman, and SkyeLann took fourth-place Chianina. Congratulations to all! Raising and caring for livestock takes a lot of time, hard work and dedication. #HornetNation
