Athens High School senior Charrod McCullough is officially one of the 28 best small high school tenors in the state after earning a spot on the Texas All-State Small School Choir.

"This is the very highest competitive honor a high school choir student can earn,” said AHS Choir Director Elizabeth VanOrden. “Charrod worked tirelessly to achieve the goal he set himself.”

McCullough survived competitive district, region and area-level auditions, the final of which was Jan. 6 at Stephen F. Austin State University. For each round he learned new music in addition to his class music, performed it before a five-judge panel, and sight read acapella an excerpt of never-before-seen music with only 30 seconds to prepare.

McCullough will perform with the Texas All-State Small School Choir in San Antonio on Feb. 10 at the Henry B. González Convention Center as part of the 2024 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic and Convention.
