Athens has produced some truly outstanding athletes over the years, three of whom will be inducted into the Athens ISD Athletic Hall of Fame in December.

“I love Athens. It’s where I grew up,” said AHS class of ’99 honoree and NFL veteran Terrence McGee. “Going home … that nostalgia hits me. The air seems different.”

The air is sure to be electric for the Dec. 7 induction dinner at the Athens Country Club. The semi-formal event begins at 6pm. Tickets are on sale to the public for $20 each until Nov. 30 or while they last, and may be purchased online here or in person at the district administration building. The district office (104 Hawn Street) is open Monday-Thursday and will be closed the week of Thanksgiving.

🏈  Barron Tanner graduated from Athens High School in 1993 and went straight to the University of Oklahoma, where he played defensive tackle three seasons for the Sooners. In 1997, he was drafted by Jimmy Johnson’s Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the NFL draft. Tanner went on to play for the Washington Redskins before spending the final three seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals.

🏈  Terrence McGee graduated from AHS in 1999 and went to Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he played cornerback four seasons for the Demons and set an NCAA record for punt returns. He was a fourth-round draft pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2003, making a Pro Bowl appearance the following year. McGee spent his 10-year NFL career with the Bills.

🏀  Alex Furr graduated from AHS in 2010 and went to Fresno State University where she was a six-year letter winner and ranks in their all-time Top 10 for 3-pointers made and career free throw percentage. In 2018, Furr was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Juco Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2020, she was named to the WBCA 30 Under 30. She is currently women’s basketball assistant coach and director of player development at Southern Methodist University.
