What is Speech & Debate?

Speech & Debate is an organization that competes in competitions all across the State of Texas and the US. Typically competitions center around conversations about the world’s most pressing issues; wars, the economy, public education, immigration, etc.

Events we compete in include: Policy Debate (CX), Lincoln Douglas Debate (LD), Congressional Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Interpretation Events.

Why You Should Join Speech & Debate:

The AHS Debate Team is by far one of the most storied and successful organizations that Athens High School has to offer. We have amassed 8 UIL State Championships in the last 10 years, as well as numerous other state medalist.

Speech & Debate provides opportunities for students to learn about complex issues happening all around the world, and how to come up with solutions to solve them.

It can also help you to find your voice. Debate provides a platform for you to speak about the things you are interested in and care about.

Finally, it provides great opportunities at the next level. There are thousands of colleges & universities looking to recruit high school students for their collegiate Speech & Debate Teams. Hundreds of Thousands of dollars are awarded every year in scholarships for debate by colleges and universities.
